Communication Techniques for the Technical Professional

A 2-Day Short Course

Research shows that most unhappiness in the technical business world comes not from poor technical skills, but from poor communication. Effective communication plays a pivotal role in nearly every aspect of business. Skilled communication impresses colleagues and customers, promotes the effective flow of information, and creates a more harmonious and productive business environment. It also can add to a technical professional’s value and potential for growth within an organization.

This course provides a set of communication tools, techniques, and strategies to address difficult communication situations. Instruction covers how to better manage colleague/manager expectations, the key elements of effective and productive meetings, how to effectively communicate with people whose personality and behavioral styles are different from yours, choosing the appropriate mode of communication, and how to clarify work requests and eliminate wasted effort.

Self-assessment surveys are used to better understand one’s communication tendencies as well as those of others. Real-life scenarios assist with the application process.

Coordinator and Lecturer

Laura G. Hyde, MEd, President, Morgan Training Company, Yorba Linda, California. Ms. Hyde focuses on applying principles of psychology to the technical communication and persuasion/”selling” environment. Drawing on her extensive experience in the computer hardware and software industry, she has developed an approach that has been enthusiastically embraced by technical professionals. She has a passion for filling the “tool boxes” of technical professionals with tools, strategies, and techniques that they can immediately utilize in their jobs to improve their effectiveness and efficiency.

In addition to providing corporate training, Ms. Hyde is often called upon to speak at regional and national conferences on business development and communication effectiveness for technical enterprises. Recent clients include Robert Bosch Corp., Philips Semiconductors, GE, Honeywell, Siemens, Plantronics, and Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories.
