Fundamentals of Lithium-Ion Battery Technology: Applications and Advances

 October 17-18


This course provides a foundation for understanding the general principles and fundamentals of lithium-ion (Li-Ion) rechargeable battery engineering. The effects of Li-Ion cell chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical design features on performance characteristics will be discussed in terms of selection criteria for battery design.  Methods for battery cell requirements engineering, trade study analyses, architecture options, and test protocols are supplemented with sample sizing calculations.  A comprehensive review of Li-Ion battery safety in terms of failure mode effects and analyses, hazard control identification, and risk management for reliable battery operation will be provided. Finally, relevant industry examples from various Li-Ion battery aerospace, electric vehicle, and energy grid applications are examined.  Special topics such as Li-ion battery recycling, shipping and transportation, and industry lessons learned will also be presented.

Expected key student outcomes of this course are as follows:

(a).  Identify Li-Ion cell design, development, and test requirements which enable a compliant battery design solution;

(b).  Describe the performance characteristics Li-Ion batteries under various operating conditions; and

(c).  Explain how to safely design, operate, store, transport, and handle Li-Ion cells and batteries.

Course is designed to benefit industry scientists, engineers, program managers, and other professionals who have a need to develop the necessary technical background to effectively design, develop, test, and operate Li-Ion battery energy storage systems.


Course Materials


The text, Linden’s Handbook of Batteries, 4th ed., Thomas B. Reddy, editor (McGraw Hill, 2011) and lecture notes are distributed on the first day of the course. Course notes are for participants only and are not for sale.

Coordinator and Lecturer

Thomas (Tom) P. Barrera, Ph.D, is currently President, Lithium-Ion Battery (LIB)-X Consulting which is a private technical consulting firm specializing in the design, development, test, and safety engineering of LIB power systems.  Previously, Tom was a Technical Fellow for The Boeing Co., battery R&D test engineer at The Aerospace Corporation (El Segundo, CA), and fuel cell systems engineer at the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (Houston, TX).  During his 19-yr. career at The Boeing Co., Tom led teams in the end-to-end development of advanced electrical power and battery energy storage systems supporting numerous commercial and government aerospace programs. Tom received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engr. at UCLA and then worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the UCLA Materials Science and Engr. Dept. Tom also received a MS in Industrial Engr. from Northwestern University, BS in Chemical Engr. (Cum Laude) and BA in Mathematics-Economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Tom formerly served as Chairman of the local Southern California/Nevada section of The Electrochemical Society (ECS) and in 2016 was elected a Member-at-Large for the Battery Division of the ECS.  Tom is also currently serving as Secretary of the AIAA Aerospace Power Systems Technical CMTE.
